REVIEW
“North Atlantic” by Bernardo Nascimento
Review by Azalu Kenneth – BFAMPP28035
STORY AND THEME
North Atlantic made me feel calm, thoughtful, and a little sad. It creates a quiet, distant atmosphere that pulls you in. From the beginning, the story feels important—even though only two characters speak, every word feels meaningful.
The plot follows a pilot who’s stranded in the sky with no fuel, and an air traffic controller on a remote island who tries to help him. They’ve never met before, but they share a powerful connection in a moment of crisis. The theme is simple but deep: even when we’re far apart, we can still connect. The film shows how a small act of kindness or calmness can mean a lot, especially in difficult moments. It’s not full of surprises, but the quiet ending hits emotionally—it stays with you.
CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES
There are only two main characters, but they feel very real. The air traffic controller is calm and kind, and the pilot sounds scared but courageous. The actors' voices and expressions carry the whole film. Even without much action or movement, you can feel their emotions. The bond they build in just a few minutes feels genuine and touching.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
The visuals in North Atlantic are stunning. The wide shots of the ocean, sky, and the empty airport create a strong sense of isolation. One shot that stood out to me showed the small aircraft flying over the vast ocean—it really showed how alone the pilot was. The colours are cool and soft, and the lighting matches the film’s mood. Everything works together to make us feel the loneliness of the setting and the vulnerability of the characters.
SOUND AND MUSIC
The sound design is very subtle, but effective. The quiet atmosphere makes you pay close attention. The silence in some parts adds more weight to the situation than loud music ever could. When there is music, it’s soft and emotional—more about mood than melody. It’s not music you notice right away, but it helps the story sink in emotionally.
OVERALL IMPACT
Even though this is a short film without any action or dramatic twists, it left a strong impression. Its strength is in its calmness, its quiet beauty, and the simple kindness shared between two strangers.
Some people might find it too quiet, especially if they prefer fast-paced stories, but for me, that’s what made it special. It reminded me that sometimes, in moments of fear or isolation, a few honest words can create something meaningful.
I would definitely recommend North Atlantic. It’s short, thoughtful, and emotionally powerful. It leaves you thinking not just about the characters, but about how we treat people especially those we don’t know. It’s a quiet film with a message that speaks loud and clear.
