GEMIIVS25 Film Review: LAZY SUSAN Director: TERRY TIMELY

Lazy Susan evokes a blend of amusement and admiration. From the beginning, the film engaged me with its playful tone and fast-paced visual storytelling. The film delivered a playful yet thought-provoking tone, blending humor with a subtle appreciation for innovation born of laziness

Within seconds I was introduced to two sisters working in a family-run diner, one highly active and the other remarkably passive. Without giving away too much, the film follows how Susan, the “lazy” sister, uses her unwillingness to move as inspiration to invent creative solutions that eventually transform the diner. Through this journey, Lazy Susan playfully challenges the stereotype that laziness is a flaw. Instead, it celebrates the idea that sometimes, laziness can be a spark for innovation and progress.

While the story progresses smoothly, it also features small but meaningful twists—especially in the way spinning objects (chairs, plates, etc.) become thematic symbols throughout the film. These visual metaphors not only add humor but also foreshadow Susan’s final invention, creating a sense of narrative satisfaction by the end.

Despite minimal dialogue, the characters in Lazy Susan are well-developed and believable. The contrast between Susan and her sister is emphasized through body language, pace, and activity level. Susan’s character is presented with a deadpan expression and minimal movement, yet her presence is magnetic due to her clever, low-effort solutions to everyday tasks. Her performance stands out for its comedic timing.

The sister, represents effort, tradition, and hard work. She is constantly moving, cleaning, and organizing. Her performance complements Susan’s perfectly, making their sibling dynamic both entertaining and relatable. The relationship between the two sisters feels authentic, with just enough tension to drive the story forward. Even in the absence of spoken words, their connection fueled by silent rivalry and eventual appreciation is compelling.

Visually, Lazy Susan is vibrant, well-composed, and rich in symbolism. The cinematography uses playful framing and motion to emphasize the central theme of spinning. Several shots are carefully composed to draw attention to circular motion plates, records, chairs, all of which highlight the evolving nature of Susan’s ideas. The use of camera rotation and repetition enhances the comedic rhythm of the film.

Color plays an important role as well. The bright, retro palette gives the film a warm, feeling, while the lighting remains consistent and soft, creating an inviting and light-hearted atmosphere. The framing also focuses heavily on Susan and her mechanical creations, which kept my attention locked on her development.

The soundtrack of Lazy Susan is another standout element. With no dialogue to rely on, the film’s soundscape plays a crucial role in storytelling. The music is upbeat and whimsical, matching the film’s tone and supporting its humorous visuals. The score also includes subtle rhythmic elements that echo the film’s central spinning theme, further enhancing the narrative unity.

Sound effects, such as clinks, whirs, and background diner noises, are well-balanced and add realism. These effects help ground the film while still allowing to drive emotion and mood. While the film’s score may not be grand, it left a lasting impression due to its consistency with the film’s visual and thematic elements.

Lazy Susan not only met expectations, it exceeded them. It successfully tell a complete, engaging story in just a few minutes, which is a notable achievement for a short film. Its strengths lie in its visual storytelling, clever editing, thematic focus, and strong character performances. If there’s any weakness, it might be the film’s brevity; some viewers may wish for more development or a deeper look into Susan’s world. However, this also contributed to its charm.

The film evokes a variety of emotions, from laughter to admiration. Its message is that creativity can come from unexpected places. The visual metaphor of spinning objects and Susan’s transformation into an accidental inventor is both satisfying and thought-provoking.

In conclusion, Lazy Susan is a delightful short film that uses visual storytelling, humor, and symbolism to convey its themes. It is highly recommended for those interested in innovative filmmaking, visual comedy, and character-driven stories. More than just a tale about laziness, it is a celebration of problem-solving and the idea that every personality, no matter how passive has value and potential.
